Level 4 vs. Level 5 Drywall Finish: Which One Do You Need?

Short answer
Level 4 is the standard finish for most homes: taped seams and screws covered with several coats of joint compound, ready for texture or flat paint. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire wall so the whole surface is uniform. Choose Level 5 for smooth, untextured walls, glossy or dark paint, and walls hit by strong side light.
What the drywall finish levels mean
The construction industry uses levels 0 to 5 to describe how far the drywall is finished. The two that matter for most homeowners:
- Level 4: tape embedded in compound, then additional coats over seams, corners and screws, sanded smooth. The paper face of the drywall is still exposed between seams.
- Level 5: everything in Level 4, plus a thin skim coat of compound over the entire surface, so the wall has one consistent texture and absorbs paint evenly.
When Level 4 is enough
If your walls or ceilings will get a texture like knockdown or orange peel, Level 4 is the right base. Texture hides small differences between the seams and the paper. It's also fine for flat or matte paint in normal lighting.
When Level 5 is worth it
- Smooth walls with no texture, which are more and more popular in new and remodeled homes.
- Semi-gloss, gloss or dark paint colors, which show every seam.
- Walls lit from the side by big windows or wall-washer lights ("critical lighting"), where seams and screw spots can show as shadows.
- Skim coating over old texture or damaged walls to make them smooth again.
Cost and time
Level 5 costs more than Level 4 because the skim coat is an extra full layer over every wall, plus drying and sanding time. For most homes, a common approach is Level 4 with texture in most rooms and Level 5 where it shows the most: a living room with big windows, a smooth accent wall, or anywhere you want glossy paint. Common questions
Is Level 5 drywall finish worth it?
It's worth it for smooth untextured walls, glossy or dark paint, and walls with strong side lighting. For textured walls and flat paint, Level 4 is usually enough.
Can you skim coat over textured walls?
Yes. A Level 5 skim coat can cover old knockdown or orange peel texture and make walls smooth again.
